The attainment of youth civic engagement in the process of transforming any community by involving them both political and non-political process is faced with the following in Nigeria:
1. Lack of fundamental knowledge of the subject matter
2. Lack of civility
3. Lack of political skill necessary to compete meaningfully in the social space
4. Inactive nature of the national agencies on advocacy and orientation
5. Over concentration of the unban dwell as target audience
6. Lack of resources needed for civil societies to engage the youth, especially the rural community youth both read and unread
Therefore, “The Mentor” is a programme that will be tailored towards addressing the underlying problems facing youth civic engagement in Nigeria by the means of sensitization of youth about the need for them to make themselves available and be involve the political process of our country with special focus on youth in the less-cities i.e. the youth in the underserved communities.
The aim of “The Mentor” is to provide and empower the youth with necessary knowledge such as youth civility, political skill needed to function, make open to them activities on going in public affairs and provide a role modelling platform for them.
“The Mentor” will use dual channel, namely, In school sensitization and empowerment as well as Out of school sensitization and empowerment.
The content of the sensitization and empowerment will be a need-based design such that it will be driven by all means of engagement such as
Community Outreaches (Town-Hall meetings, focus group discussions, interviews etc.),
School to school sensitization – (Educate leaders in school, encourage student civility etc.),
Media Publicity: We will organize on air interviews (Radio and TVs) programmes, Social media viral advertisement and dissemination, youth civil engagement content publication and prints.
Collaborations: We will collaborate with several other civil organizations both local and international as well as collaborate will existing orientation agencies by bring making them concentrate more on the issue of youth civic engagement in their re-orientations and advocacies.
